Sawdust Art Festival

The theme of the poster for project 2 was the Sawdust Art Festival held annually in Laguna Beach, California. Since the area is significant for its eucalyptus trees, which are only in specific parts of the world, I wanted to be sure to include them in my poster. The background is a faded forest of eucalyptus trees, colored brown to portray the beautiful canyon landscape of Laguna Beach. I also added some eucalyptus leaves to the design to re-establish the design and add color. The overall color scheme of the poster is very basic and natural. I based the greens off the color scheme of the actual Sawdust Art Festival website. I wanted to keep the design of the poster relatively simple so that it could be replicated in various forms such as t-shirts, posters, ads, etc. I did not include lots of pictures. Instead I included one photo of abstract art to engage the viewer.

Humane Society Calendar

The assignment for project three was to create a wall calendar for a fundraising drive for the Humane Society. As an incentive and in gratitude, the calendar is a gift which serves as a calendar wall decor and includes coupons for pet owners. I included coupons for food and flea treatment because those are things pet owners need monthly. The coupons each have dotted borders around them as a guide for people to cute them out. I aligned all the coupons together on the bottom so that they could be cut out easily without ruining the pretty appearance of the calendar as decor.

Each month has its own theme which correlates with their significant season or holiday. To add interest and color to the calendar, I add scenic backgrounds. I faded them to fifty percent opacity so that the calendar could still be seen and written on easily. I had to use mostly black for the numbers and lettering so that it showed up against the detailed colored backgrounds.

The pictures of the animals are adorably in costume so that pet lovers will be reminded of how much they love animals everyday. Above each picture is a fun fact about animals. I used the chalkduster font for its free hand appearance to seem less formal and more fun. The borders around the pictures and calendar are color coordinated to the color of the season or holiday each month represents.
